The Fat Loss Paradox

There is a pervasive myth echo-chambered through gym lockers across New York: if you want to lose fat, you must "do more cardio". While cardiovascular health is vital, relying solely on cardio for fat loss is like trying to empty a swimming pool with a teaspoon if you don't strength train. Trust me I've tried it a few times while letting my upper body "rest" from weights.

The images above and  below represent a period of roughly 2 months spent focused primarily on strength training while prioritizing protein and sleep. I used slow burning carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes, oats and bananas. Roughly 300 grams of carbs per day and 180 grams of protein per day. I let my fat intake be whatever I got from meat, eggs and fish, I didn't track it.

My sessions were exactly the same as I train my clients and exactly what I recommend to them. I do this a few times a year to get into "beach shape". It's not easy, but it's always worth it.

Usually I maintain around 19% body fat.

If you have more fat as a percentage it's much easier to lose it.

The Science of Afterburn

Building lean muscle through strength training does more than just make you stronger—it transforms your biology. Unlike cardio, which burns calories primarily during the activity, muscle tissue is metabolically expensive. By increasing your lean mass, you effectively raise your resting metabolic rate (RMR).

For the busy professional, this is the ultimate optimization. You are burning more fuel even while sitting in a boardroom or sleeping, making strength training a far more efficient long-term strategy for body composition.

Redefining the Routine

This doesn't mean you should abandon your runs along the Hudson. Cardio remains essential for endurance and heart health. However, shifting the priority to resistance training ensures that your efforts result in a tighter, more athletic frame rather than just a smaller version of your current self.

At Just Train LLC, we specialize in high-impact programming that respects your schedule. We focus on compound movements that recruit maximum muscle fiber, triggering the metabolic shift you need to see real change.

Metabolic Precision

We believe in working smarter, not longer. Every repetition is a step toward a higher baseline of health and performance.
